BIO

Maartje Strijbis (°1985) is an Amsterdam based portrait- and (conceptual) documentary photographer. She holds a bachelors degree in Theatre studies from the University of Amsterdam and studied jazz vocals at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. From a young age she photographed everything with her grandmother's analogue box cameras. This way of recording and storytelling became intertwined with her musical- and performance practice; an eclectic mix of soundscapes, installations, performance interventions in landscape, photographic images – both analogue and digital, song and video.

Maartje studied at the International Institute of Photography, the FOTOfactory, where she graduated in 2018 with a successful exhibition. She works on transmedia stories concerning desire for isolation, sublime natural experiences, mythology, rituals and boundaries where humans and nature meet.

Maartje is intrigued by people, their habits and environments. Due to a broad field of study she works interdisciplinary and with a sharp eye for analytical observation as well as practical creative input. Portraits are her strength.

In 2017 she was shortlisted for the Olympus Young Talent Award - group exhibition at FOAM Amsterdam - part of the SLEEP Tokyo project and GUP Magazine included her work in their New Dutch Photography Talent 2019 book and exhibition. Maartje is currently working on the book Nessuno: vulcano magica and two exhibitions of this project in Italy in September 2019. One of the exhibitions will take place on the active volcano Stromboli. Part of her Tokyo stories Aokigahara and the new series Skies since then will be presented at Photo Basel and Les Rencontres de la Photographie d'Arles as part of Fresh Eyes – The 100 greatest emerging European photographers of 2019.
